The drive from Aurora to Plainfield on US Route 30 is uneventful. There's some old motels, an adult bookstore, some fields, roadside asparagus, and now--popping up like weeds--cheap new development. But it's the old and worn down that intrigues me the most. The motels that are still operating. Not for any regular traveler but for the migrant worker or the down on their luck. They're rented for weeks at a time or permanently and although they consist of one room and a bath they're home.
